Chihuahua History
The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world, and probably did not originate in Mexico. It is more likely that this little dog came to North America from Malta, where it was known for centuries as the Keib Ta But (The pocket dog), although the FCI/AKC still cite Mexico as this dog breed's country of origin. It appears the breed was transported to Central America around 600 B.C., and it was there, in the Villa D'Allende, in the Chihuahua province, that they were found by American tourists. American dog breeders subsequently refined the breed. There are two varieties, the long coat Chihuahua and the smooth coat Chihuahua, but the overall standard is the same for both.

Exceptionally smart, the Chihuahua is quite agile and courageous. Obedience training is beneficial because it help the dog to establish a sense of security.
